Unapologetically making waves and pushing boundaries, the HER Multimedia team at SDSU, led by Dr. Megan Ebor, is dedicated to challenging the status quo through their research, mentorship, and teaching. By forming a dynamic partnership with community members, they transform research from a study of people into a collaboration with them. This approach places community members at the center of their work, fostering personal investment and participation, which drives meaningful change together.

“I came to Larissa at a pivotal point in my career. I had award-winning films on my resume, and a blank lab on my hands to build into something great. What I didn’t have was a brand. Larissa and her team helped me with everything: brand name, logo design, copywriting, web design, film poster design, wall murals for my lab, and more. She nailed the logo on the first try! We work together very well and I look forward to future projects with Ravel Brands!”

Where we began

Megan reached out to me when she saw the work I did for a fellow leader in the health equity field. She was given a large, blank lab to build her dream… a place where research and film meet to provide real health outcomes. She was at square one, needed a name for her org, logo, brand, website, film poster and even wall mural designs for her lab. So we got to work!

The brand name

Megan’s work is unique. She combines health equity research data and filmmaking to create educational resources for the Black community, with a strong focus on positive HIV health outcomes for aging women. Whew, that was a mouthful… so you can see that naming this organization was a labor of love! After several attempts, we landed on the clear winner: HER (Health Equity Research) Mulitmedia Lab.

Brand Inspiration

Megan was very inspired by the design, color and texture of African mud cloth… and so was I! I loved this direction.

Led to the color palette

The logo design

Using the colors and shapes found in the mud cloth patterns, and a touch of 90’s hip-hop culture, I created this workdmark for HER.

PAUSE, new urgent request!

The film poster

Mid-project, Megan let me know she needed an artistic-style movie poster for her new film “Even Me 2.0”. So of course, I went in on that, and we both loved the result!

The look includes the HIV ribbon red, and newspaper headlines about HIV in aging women.

PLAY, back to the branding project!

The web design

The textures and colors of the brand now established … it was time to kill it on the web design. The website features a film library of all her films, similar to a Netflix style.

Copywriting

Megan’s brand package included copywriting assistance for her brand story. We told her unique story using graphics and animation.
